A Few Things To Know About Timber Structures

If you take a look at some of the most noteworthy timber structures in the world, such as the Great Eastern Temple in Japan or the Metropol Parasol in Spain, it is easy to appreciate exactly what can be done with a little ingenuity and super-strong timber. Timber structures are resilient, durable, and usually a little more complex because the building process affords them to be. If you are planning to build a structure, whether it is a gazebo for your backyard or a new home, you should definitely get more familiar with timber structures

What exactly is a timber structure?

A timber structure is a building that is created through a traditional process known as timber framing. Timber framing has been in use for a long time, but was more common before the 19th century, according to Wikipedia. This form of framing has other names that you may be more familiar with, such as post-and-beam framing. The process of creating a timber structure involves using large and heavy pieces of timber that are conjoined through wooden pegs or other beams. Timber structures do not have the typical wooden tresses to form the roof peaks, and in many cases, the interior of timber structures allows open visibility of the top framing because it can be so elaborately appealing.

What is a timber structure made out of?

The reason timber structures are referred to as such is because they are built using rough logs and not pre-milled lumber that you go out and buy at a store. The timber was traditionally harvested from trees that had been cut down, augered, axed, or otherwise worked by hand to create the long pieces. Most of the time, the timber used would be one of the many hardwoods, such as oak or hickory.

Can you use trees on your property for building a timber structure?

The most expensive part about building a timber structure is obtaining the wealth of hardwood material for the job. While processes have changed and logs may be milled more by machine than hand, the building process remains the same. If you hire a contractor to build a timber structure, you may be able to save some money if you have good standing timber on your property that can be used. Therefore, if you are planning to have some trees removed, it is well worth contacting your chosen contractor about whether or not the logs should be preserved for a building project.
